Geology (BSc) at vic

Review

Course
Courses in geology are awesome at vic, depending on what you want to do. If you are interested in geophysics, structural geology, tectonics, sedimentology, marine geoscience, Antarctic geology or glacier dynamics, then vic has world renoun academic staff with excellent teaching skills that will hold you in good stead through your undergraduate degree. However, if you are more interested in mining geology, metamorphics, igneous or hydrogeology, its a bit light on the ground in undergraduate. That said there is a solid team that teaches igneous and metamorphic at post grad level.
Lecturers
The undergraduate teaching staff are awesome and know their shit.
Career Opportunities
This isn't really emphasised much at vic, which is more academically inclined.
University
The university itself is cool, better than Auckland, but Otago probably has a better campus.
City Life/Social Scene
City life is good, town is compact. Vic uni doesn't really know what a social scene is - o-week is a bit of a disaster each year.
Campus Facilities
The library is pretty good, and everything else is pretty standard
Student Association
VUWSA sucks and gets nothing done.
Clubs/Societies
Clubs are good and do what VUWSA should be doing. Geolsoc rules
Sports Facilities
The rec centre is good, though not as good as the free gym membership for all that Otago offers.
Accommodation
uni accommodation only exists for 1st years in the form of many uni hostels, which are pretty good. Everton doesn't count coz its grimey.
Overall Comments
Geology at vic was far better than I expected. The academic staff are awesome and are really good to get to know, students are really friendly and form a strong community over the 3 year degree, and the strong academic curriculum is backed up by the strong student-staff vuw Geology Society, which serves to unite the entire department.
